Video highlights efforts to ‘go green’ in the fire service
The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) and Dale City (VA) Volunteer Fire Department (DCVFD) were featured on the Mother Nature Network as part of a video series presented by Georgia-Pacific that highlights green practices in businesses and organizations. The September segment highlights the NVFC’s Guide for Going Green in the Fire Service and DCVFD’s successful initiatives in the green-built environment.
Built in 2005, the DCVFD fire station is the ninth station in the nation to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. The department was featured in the NVFC’s Guide for Going Green as a leader in green practices in the fire service. The video provides an overview of many of the innovative ‘green’ features in the building and the safe and healthy work environment that is created for the volunteer firefighters.
“Going green is important for every citizen, but for the fire service in particular, they’re in a position to really impact a community. They’re admired and they set an example for the rest of the citizens in the community,” said Moore. “Dale City is a great example of a fire station that has reduced their impact on the environment, protected the health of their members, and set a really great example for the community.”
