FASNY Encourages Fire Departments to ‘Open Your Doors’ During National Volunteer Week

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) launched a campaign to encourage New York fire departments to hold an open house to kick-start National Volunteer Week on April 9-10. Whether your department is in New York or on the other side of the country, an open house is a great way to introduce community members to your department and capture the public’s interest.

Volunteer fire and emergency service departments all over the country are struggling to find new recruits and keep their numbers up. The FASNY campaign asks that departments across the state of New York join together to hold open houses in conjunction with National Volunteer Week to demonstrate to the public what volunteering is all about and draw in more members. Departments everywhere should consider doing the same and opening their doors to show their community what it means to be a volunteer first responder.

FASNY has compiled a series of great resources to help departments host an open house for recruitment purposes. These include a tips checklist to help you plan your event, a promotional checklist to help you promote your event, and a series of customizable promotional materials such as posters, banners, signs, web ads, and a press release. While the promotional materials are specific to the New York event, departments outside New York can use these ideas as inspiration for promoting a similar event in their own community.
